An open fire spat embers at the Cardinal’s pallor as though the flames had been the Third’s vengeful spirit himself. He sat cross-legged on a Bergère, swirling his glass of red wine. He wondered how many times the Third sat in this very seat, ruminating and simpering in the same vulpine way Cardinal Copia did now. He wondered if Emeritus had ever considered the possibility of a rat amongst the ranks —— if he would ever fall to the hands of his own. Especially not dear milquetoast Cardinal Copia, the waxy-faced serpent of which The Clergy did not suspect for a beat. No, no this was the work of a calculated madman! Copia laughed into his glass, knocking back another swig.
He is alone except for the requiem of pelting rain and cinders. Alone he always was and will be. But that mattered nought —— he gleamed knowing power was now at the centre of his palms. It was Copia’s to wield like the blade in his pocket. His smile like the twisting of the knife; The knife . . . Open flesh. A sick, guttural noise he’d never forget. Years of vying for something more had finally come to its climax at that moment. His smile did not falter —— it stayed there, cold and ambitious. The wind howled like a legion of banshees and the fire roared before coming to a sudden halt; A dead tranquility. For they too had realised nothing would put an end to Copia’s sibilant endeavours.
He laughed again.
Checkmate.
